The national and international companies have shown their inclination towards our vision. I assure you that our students are equipped with the professionalism and they will prove themselves to be an asset for every organization they would work for. I wish for a long lasting relation with these companies.

8 Keys to Job Fair Success:

1. Do your research.
Take time to research participating companies prior to the job fair. After deciding which companies you most want to meet with, take some time to check out each of their websites to learn more about the company and the jobs they have available.

2. Dress professionally and create a favorable first impression.
Since first impressions are critical when searching for a job, dressing professionally for a job fair makes perfect sense. Conservative business attire is often preferred for both men and women but business casual may be appropriate for certain jobs or professions. Also, attention to detail is important so be sure to wear comfortable, neat, well-polished shoes; carry a professional briefcase; ensure your hair is clean and well groomed: your nails are neatly manicured, and go light on make-up and perfume. It is best to downplay tattoos and additional body piercings whenever possible. Dressing professionally relays the message to employers that you are a serious candidate in the job search process.

3. Be prepared and develop a plan.
When arriving at a job fair it’s wise to first study the layout of the fair and check to see if any additional employers have been added to the list. In addition to your resume, be sure to bring several pens, a notepad, and business cards to hand out. You may also carry a cheat sheet that reminds you of important information on the companies you want to meet. One job fair strategy you might want to employ is to plan on meeting with your first choice employers first and then move on to your second and third choices.

4. Bring along lots of resumes.
Be sure to bring extra resumes to the fair. You may end up handing out more than one resume to participating employers, so it’s best to maximize your efforts by bringing an ample supply of resumes to avoid running out. Make sure your resume is well prepared and looked over by at least one (preferably more) other person. You may decide to bring along different versions of your resume. Targeting your resume to specific jobs and/or employers offers an opportunity to focus on specific skills and accomplishments that’s required for certain jobs or professions. Resumes should always be printed on professional white, gray, or ecru resume paper and free of photos or fancy fonts.

5. Meet and greet employers.
Since first impressions are critical in the interviewing process, be prepared to assertively introduce yourself with confidence and enthusiasm. Maintain direct eye contact, offer a firm handshake, sport a genuine smile, and show enthusiasm – since these are all attributes employers look for in potential new hires. Be prepared to give each employer you meet a 30 – 60 second elevator speech that highlights your career objectives, strengths, interests, relevant skills and the type of job you are seeking. Be prepared to answer questions such as why you want to work for this particular company or why you feel that you would be an asset to the organization.

6. Practice and prepare questions for the interviewer.
The best way to prepare for an interview is to practice, practice, practice. Be sure to write down any vital information on the back of the employer’s business card to make it easy to follow up. Be prepared to ask each employer questions including how to arrange for a second interview.

7. Be prepared to network.
Career Fairs are all about networking. It has been estimated that between 50% and 75% of all jobs are found through networking. By networking with recruiters, other job fair participants, and professional associations and/or employment agencies participating in the fair, you can increase your personal connections and improve your chances of getting called back for a second interview.

8. Don’t forget to follow up.
Following up with recruiters is one of the most important things job fair participants can do immediately after the job fair. Sending a personalized thank you note to each recruiter identifies you as a thoughtful and serious job candidate that they will want to get to know better. By restating your interests in the company and your qualifications, you will put yourself on their radar screen when they are in the process of seeking candidates to interview for future positions that open up. You may decide to enclose another copy of your resume with your letter to ensure that the employer has your information available. Following up a thank you letter with a phone call can also increase your chances of being called back for an interview.

Most college students find themselves working part-time to pay for expenses such as books, lab fees, meals, and everyday expenses. Traditionally, the best jobs have been either on-campus jobs such as tutoring and helping out others, or working off-campus at restaurants and other establishments. The problem with off-campus jobs is they are typically evening and weekend jobs, and pretty labor intensive, which leaves you very tired.

What if you could work at home (or in your dorm), work your own hours, and make just as much or more money? Well heck yea! That sounds good doesn’t it! A lot of students these days turn to the internet for a way to make a few extra dollars, however there is SOOO much HYPE out there it’s hard to determine what’s legitimate and what’s a scam. The fact is that most are SCAMS, or ridiculously expensive to get into, and not very practical.

So where do you find online jobs for college students that are practical?

First, let’s realize that any viable online job will require some effort on your part, and there is no such thing as something for nothing. You are not going to “get rich quick”. If you see something that says you will make gobs of cash overnight, don’t fall for it. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Here is a list of practical online jobs where you can make some real money, listed in order of income potential.

#1 – Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is great from the standpoint that you can start in this business for next to nothing (You need an internet connection and a computer), and the income potential is only limited by YOU. What you need to succeed in this business is a good work ethic, a plan, and a little Internet Marketing training. You can find a plan, FREE training, and all the resources you will need at the bottom of this page, but you will need to supply the desire to succeed. You can easily find yourself generating plenty of extra cash, and a way to pay off those student loans as well!

#2 – Writing Articles

Articles are in high demand on the internet, and there are plenty companies and marketers that will pay you for quality articles. We are talking 300-500 word articles in most cases. You can find business in forums, online ads, and places like AssociatedContent.com and Elance.com. Top writers make upwards of $5000/month, but keep in mind they’ve been doing it awhile. If you can write quality articles and you are consistent you can probably pull in $1000-$2000 per month after you get going in it.

#3 – Paid Surveys

Yes, you can make money doing online surveys. No, it’s not going to make you rich. Finding the right survey companies and participating in focus groups is the key. You will find a lot of products that claim to have the best resources for finding quality survey companies, but it’s been my experience that you can pretty much find them on your own by doing some research online. Check out forums and blogs related to paid surveys. You can probably pull in $1000/month if you do your homework and at least 3-5 surveys a day.

Conclusion

My personal recommendation out of the list above is #1. The reason being, that you can put in the same amount of work as #2 and #3 and have residual income flowing in from your work. It’s working smart in my opinion. Additionally, the income you can make is virtually unlimited. You can start small, get some cash flowing, and then start generating multiple streams of income.

No matter what your decision, good luck, and I applaud your hard work getting a higher education. Knowledge is power!

A great interview-generating executive resume is all about differentiating yourself from others competing for the same jobs. With constantly changing trends in strategic resume writing, new ways to accomplish this differentiation are always coming forward. If you take advantage of the latest trends before they mainstream, you are much more likely to stand out, make a positive connection, and stimulate the attention you deserve.

Include a leadership/personal brand statement. Begin to build a vibrant message highlighting your vitality, pivotal leadership strengths, and unique value proposition by answering questions like this:

What jazzes you about your work each and every day? What are you most passionate about getting to and accomplishing at work?

What talents and characteristics do you possess that represent the best in your field?

How did you achieve the career successes that most benefitted your companies? What specific actions did you take?

What critical contributions did you make to past companies that wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t there?

You will further support your brand statement if you weave key brand attributes throughout your resume.

Format your executive resume for the reader. More and more hiring decision-makers at the executive level are reviewing resumes on Blackberry-type devices when they are on the go. Brief, concise, brand-focused statements of value surrounded by enough white space to make them stand out will have the greatest impact. Long, dense paragraphs make it hard for the reader to quickly access and digest important make-or-break information about you.

Keep your executive resume to two pages. To accommodate the need for brevity, pare down and consolidate all your great achievements and qualifications into a quickly readable communication. Provide deeper slices of success “stories” in collateral one-to-two-page documents – Leadership Initiatives Brief, Achievement Summary, Career Biography, Reference Dossier, etc. These companion documents can be crafted to stand alone for networking purposes.

Use the top of the first page to your best advantage. Since the top of your resume is the first, and possibly the only section that will be read, place your most important information here. It’s okay to move up to the forefront information normally found further down within the “Professional Experience” section — especially if it represents the best you have to offer. If you immediately capture your readers’ attention with vivid illustrations of your promise of value, they’ll be more likely to read the entire document.

Highlight your key areas of expertise once. Instead of taking up precious space repeating obvious lists of responsibilities for each position you’ve held, consolidate them in the top part of the first page. For best impact, position them in nicely formatted columns or a shaded graphic box.

There are some questions which are asked by almost every other employer, and whose answers are very much critical for your selection. Normally candidates either duck these questions and give unsatisfactory responses, leading to their exit from the game.

Why are you leaving your current job?
The employer is seeking to identify problems you have had in the past that you may carry over into your new job. Always cite positive reasons for joining and leaving a company. Never criticize your previous employer or work colleagues. Avoid statements that may convey a negative impression of yourself or your ability to get on with others. State that you are looking for a new challenge and briefly explain why you see the advertised position as an important step forward in your career.

Why should we employ you rather than one of the other candidates?
The interviewer wants to know what unique quality makes you the best person for the job. To differentiate yourself from the other candidates, you must show that you have researched the company thoroughly and studied the job description. You should be prepared to demonstrate clearly how your skills, qualifications, and accomplishments match the employer’s specific needs. It is important to convey genuine enthusiasm for the post.

What are your strenghts and weaknesses?
This particularly tricky question requires painstaking preparation and rehearsal. The interviewer is looking for evidence of critical self-assessment and a commitment to continuous self-development. Stress specific job-related strengths and accomplishments. Select one weakness that could be viewed both as positive and negative, e.g. you are a perfectionist who tends to work too long hours. Show, by particular example, how you have successfully addressed this tendency. Make sure to portray yourself in a positive light. Never mention a weakness that is directly related to job for which you are being interviewed.

Tell me about yourself.
The interviewer wants to know how well suited you are to the job and how you can benefit the company. Spend no longer than two minutes answering this question. By analysing the job description and carrying out detailed company research in advance, you will have a clear idea of the ideal candidate. Focus on your skills, qualifications, and accomplishments that relate to the advertised position. Remember that the company has a problem and they are looking for the best solution. Prove to them that you can solve their problem better than anyone else.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
This question is designed to determine your career plan. Have you well planned short-term and long-term career goals? Is the advertised position consistent with these? If hired, are you likely to commit yourself fully to the company or will you seize the first opportunity to move on? Show that you have a structured way of establishing goals. Demonstrate the importance of the job on offer as part of your career progression. Stress that you are ambitious, but realistic. Let them know that you plan to develop professionally within the company and to work energetically to obtain promotion.

Why do you want to work for our company?
The interviewer is trying to discover how much you know about the company. Once again, detailed company research will pay handsome dividends when it comes to answering this question. The candidate who displays a knowledge of the company and an awareness of the challenges it faces is more likely to be selected than the tongue-tied interviewee who looks perplexed when asked why he or she wants to work for that particular company.
You should find out as much as you can about the company’s organisational structure; its financial history; its range of products, goods or services; its aims and objectives; its philosophy and culture; its trading methods; its history, current position, and future developments; its competitors; its training programmes; its attitude towards its customers; its achievements; and any problems it may have. Tailor your answer in terms of their needs not yours.
Be positive. Say that you like what you’ve heard about the company and the way they treat their staff and customers. Stress that you are confident that you can make a meaningful contribution.

You just scheduled an interview. Congratulations! All your hard work putting the finishing touches on your resume, networking and job searching has finally paid off. Follow these interview tips and you’re sure to nail the interview and be the winning candidate:

Be prepared.
This means more than merely making extra copies of your résumé. It means having researched the industry and company, as well as thought about how your skills match the responsibilities of the position, says recruiter and career coach Rick Nelles.

Dress to impress.
Your interview attire should be tastefully simple, clean and wrinkle-free. Forgo trendy for conservative when deciding what to wear.

Be on time.
Being on time for an interview really means arriving at least 15 minutes before your scheduled interview. Not only will your punctuality be noted, the extra time allows you to calm down, focus and review your résumé and notes you prepared for the interview.

Make eye contact.
Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake, warm smile and direct eye contact. Avoiding the gaze of the interviewer can make you appear inexperienced, unsure of yourself and untrustworthy.

Show your enthusiasm.
If you’re locked in a dead heat for a job with other candidates, you need to find a way to stand out. “In a tight candidate race, the most enthusiastic almost always gets the job,” says Martin Yate, career coach and author of several career advice books, including “Knock ‘Em Dead 2007 — The Ultimate Job Search Guide.” Your enthusiasm for the job tells the recruiter you will be a highly-motivated employee.

Demonstrate that you’re a team player.
Employers want a team worker who can take direction, Yate advises. No one wants to hire an unmanageable employee. They also are looking for someone who can galvanize a team to work toward a common goal. So give some examples of how you worked together with colleagues to tackle a large project or service an important client.

Sell yourself.
The interview is a sales pitch in a sense. Have a list of things you want to make sure the interviewer knows about you and be ready to bring specific topics up on your own if they are not adequately touched on in the interview.

Be honest.
You should never stretch the truth on your résumé or during the interview. Today’s technology makes fact checking far reaching and lightning quick. Remember, companies are looking to fill a position, not hand out the Nobel Peace Prize. You don’t have to be a Renaissance man (or woman), just the right person for the job.

Act professionally.
You would think this goes without saying, but candidates often need to be reminded not to chew gum, slouch or steer the conversation too far off work-related themes. Sit up straight and conduct yourself with a professional demeanor at all times.

Ask questions.
An interview is meant to be a fact-finding mission for both the interviewer and the interviewee. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the responsibilities of the job, clients or projects. In fact, it is to your detriment to be completely passive and reactive in an interview. If you do not engage the interviewer, you appear weak and ineffective.

Say “thank you.”
Close the interview with another firm handshake, a “thank you” and a smile. Ask when they will be making their decision and if you should follow-up. Later, send a note or e-mail thanking the interviewer for the time spent and letting them know you are interested in the position and will contact them again soon.

Maintaining an edge over other candidates is of chief concern for every job seeker. Some gain an advantage by submitting well-crafted application materials, while others set themselves apart with insightful responses during the interview. Increasingly, though, individuals searching for employment are using a different tool: the Internet.

With personal Web sites, blogs, social-networking site profiles, message board posts and newsgroup comments all floating in cyberspace, you can use the Web to present a hiring manager with a wealth of information about your professional qualifications with just a few clicks of the mouse. The key is maintaining a positive online presence. Here’s how:

Leverage the Web
You can act as your own public relations agent by launching a polished and professional Web site or blog related to your career. Post your résumé and links to any industry association articles that you have authored or been quoted in, and reference noteworthy accomplishments or speaking engagements. By highlighting your communication abilities and showing that you track industry news and trends, you can position yourself as a leader in the field, build a positive Web presence and better market your skills to employers.

When applying for an opening, note your URL in your job-application materials and direct hiring managers to the information you most want them to view.

Also consider that some prospective employers may stumble upon online information related to you on their own. So make sure what they discover paints a positive portrait of your professional life. Web sites like Ziggs and ZoomInfo allow you to create your own profile and are popular destinations for hiring managers.

Another good idea is to join a professional association. Some allow you to post your contact information. Becoming a member of a board, presenting at association gatherings and maintaining an active presence in the organization are other ways to ensure your name is referenced in a favorable light on the Internet.

Get Search Savvy
Do you know everything the Internet has to say about you? Seek and ye shall find — type your name into a search engine. If you have a common name, refine the search by placing your name in quotation marks, or add your middle initial, hometown, profession or former employer. Also, be sure to check multiple search engines, as results can vary. Your goal is for references that speak positively about you to appear near the top of the results.

Understand What You’re Up Against
As many job seekers have discovered, the Internet can be an unforgiving place. For instance, you may be unpleasantly surprised to find a link to a controversial editorial you submitted to a newspaper years ago, an unfiltered rant you hastily posted on an online bulletin board in college or unflattering photographs taken at the end of a wild company party. In cases where unsettling personal references seem to be permanent online fixtures, plan to discuss the topic in a job interview. While your online transgressions might not come up, it certainly helps to be prepared just in case.

Going forward, be mindful that digital damage is often self-inflicted. If you have a Web site, blog or a profile on social-networking sites like MySpace or Friendster, review every piece of information you present about yourself. Questionable content might include confession booth-like commentaries detailing personal exploits, politically incorrect or risqué humor, or even seemingly innocuous beach vacation photos. If you’ve posted information that could be detrimental to your job search, hit the delete button and exercise more discretion in the future.

It’s critical that today’s professionals routinely conduct online self-searches, and then seek opportunities to build positive references. Taking a proactive approach to managing your Web presence could help you leap past other applicants and create greater career options for yourself.

You could probably fill an entire library with well-meaning books that share conventional wisdom about the best ways to conduct your job search, as well as how to write your cover letter and resume and how to prepare for your job interview.

But with the uncertain economy and more competition for existing jobs, it’s necessary to look beyond textbook examples to see what practical advice is working for candidates right now.

Start your own blog
The phenomenon of blogging has exploded in the last several years. Although it can be a powerful communication tool, it’s not necessarily a unique one. The social media tracking site Technorati follows more than 112 million blogs every day.

But for job seekers, a blog can be a resume in motion. It can show potential employers who you are and what you’re about in a very comprehensive way.

“I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of Web 2.0 as it relates to my industry,” explains Debbie Horovitch, a marketing and media specialist. She decided to start a blog and use its content as a virtual calling card, where she can show readers what she’s learned.

“The results of my efforts are online for all potential employers. They can see that I am a self-starter, and understand business trends, opportunities and needs.”

Kelly Rusk was also pounding the pavement. Rusk, a media strategist, had been looking for a new job after a merger left her unhappy with her job. “I sent out dozens of résumés, even had a few interviews with no success,” she recalls.

She decided to take a different approach and completely bypassed distributing her résumé. “I focused on building my personal brand via my blog, and participating on various social networking sites and Twitter. Within a couple months, job offers started coming to me,” Rusk says.

She eventually landed her current job with a startup media company. “Because they came to me,” Rusk says, “I had a lot more negotiating power than ever before.”

Work with your network
Job seekers know that tapping into social and professional networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Brightfuse.com can connect you to contacts that might be the key to your next job.

But in addition to those structured networks, job seekers are reaching out to the contacts in their informal network — close friends and family. It may seem like an unsexy or uninteresting approach in a tech-savvy atmosphere, but it capitalizes on one asset that everyone has access to: people.

“I was looking for a job to help make ends meet in a new city without much success,” says Brandon J. Mendelson, a New York-based writer and educator. He found out about a job for a local school through an important part of his informal network: his wife.

It may seem like old-fashioned pavement pounding, but as Mendelson says, you have to get the word about what you’re looking for out there. “Make friends, build a network and in tough times don’t be afraid to ask tactfully for help,” he states.

Make yourself stand out
A recent CareerBuilder.com survey asked recruiters and hiring managers about some of the most unusual tactics that job seekers used to get their attention.

Among their most memorable responses:

A candidate brought a broom to the interview to “clean up the waste and corruption in the office.”

Another applicant wore a shirt to the interview that said, “Please hire me.”

A very tenacious candidate showed up with breakfast for the employer every day until he was hired.

One job seeker was inspired to write a poem about why she wanted the job. She featured the poem in her cover letter.

And a very artistically minded applicant created an electronic résumé with flash animation and musical score.

These might be extreme examples, but the message is clear: The old ways are outdated. Job seekers who land the jobs they want are increasingly going above and beyond the standard job search expectations.

Competitors in the job market are treating their job searches as a job in and of itself, so job seekers need to make sure that they have powerful cover letters and résumés, are prepared for the interview, and know as much as they can about their potential employer and the people to whom they’ll be talking.

Unfortunately, not many people are strangers to the downward spiraling economy that began in December 2007 and continued to deplete throughout 2008.

In fact, November 2008 marked some of worst numbers in decades in terms of job loss: The unemployment rate, for example, hit a 14-year high this November at a rate of 6.7 percent. That month also counted 1.9 million jobs lost throughout 2008 alone; two-thirds of those losses occurred in the last three months. The number of unemployed people increased from 10.1 million in October to 10.3 million in November, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Since 2007, the number of unemployed people has increased by 3.1 million, and the unemployment rate has gone up by 2 percent. For the 10.3 million currently unemployed people, however, there is hope for some reprieve in 2009.

The labor force is expected to increase by 12.8 million workers over the 2006 -2016 period, according to the BLS. Total employment is expected to increase by 10 percent to 166.2 million over that period as well, while an estimated 15.6 million jobs will be added by 2016. While that year seems like a long way off today, a certain number of new jobs will be added each year leading up to 2016 — including in 2009.

It should be noted, however, that the jobs that will be added won’t be evenly distributed across industries and occupational groups. It goes without saying that changes in consumer demand, technology and the like will continue to affect the economic structure.

Industries that have seen growth since 2007 (according to the most recent data from the BLS) include management, business and financial operations; professional and related occupations; service occupations; sales and office occupations; and installation, maintenance and repair occupations.
