The institution started its career in 1921 as the ‘ Mughalpura Technical College ’. Later it became the ‘Maclagan Engineering College’, a name given to it in 1923 when Sir Edwards Maclagan, the then Governor of the Punjab who laid the foundation stone of the main building, now called the Main Block, which still retains its majesty despite the wear and tear of over eight decades. At that stage the institution offered courses of study in only two disciplines; Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

At the present time, the University is developing three more campuses; the Faisalabad Campus, the Kala-Shah-Kaku Campus, and the Rachna College .

Admission Procedure: The admission procedure in the university is almost the same as any other engineering institute in Pakistan. For the undergraduate admissions, U.E.T. conducts the entry test usually somewhere in July-September . Newspaper advertisement is given to call for applications, wherein the interested candidates, who have atleast 60% marks in F.Sc. or equivalent examinations, apply.

This year, i.e. 2009, U.E.T. introduced an online facility to apply, to make the application procedure simple and easier for the students from outside Lahore. For this purpose laboratories with guidance on application procedure, in some of university ’s departments were allocated, to help the students who do not have computer or Internet facility at their homes. After the students have applied, they are issued a kind of roll number slip, with the test date, time and centre mentioned on it. The entry test carries a total of 400 marks, with negative marking rules of minus 1 for each wrong answer. U.E.T.’s entry test is valid for all the engineering universities of Punjab, as well as some reciprocal seats in other provinces. The final result is calculated by using the formula 70% F.Sc/equivalent marks + 30% entry test marks.

First merit list is displayed usually one week after the entry test. Minimum three and at times 4-5 merit lists are displayed. So, even if some candidate did not get into the faculty of his choice, he still has a chance of being upgraded (provided they gave the option in the form they filled) and have secured admission in the university. Few years back there were separate self-finance seats, but now they have been merged in the open merit seats, but other special seats like over-seas etc. still exist.

Faculties and Departments: Now coming to the faculties and departments, faculty can be thought of as a container of departments, departments are sub-divisions/parts of faculties.

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology got university charter in 2000 and today it is ranked as 7th top university in HEC ranking for research and development. This university is renowned in Pakistan for its sophistication and discipline. Its faculty and students mutually create a healthy learning atmosphere where one feels motivated and enthusiastic to learn. I am enrolled in its MS Mgmt program for last 2 years and each minute I’m spending here increase my overall knowledge base in a positive manner. The library is up-to-date and we have the facility of digital library as well. Digital library enables us to access online databases of journals and research papers. The faculty is highly qualified and experienced. Comsats offers its students bus and hostel facility. The main campus is in Islamabad and there are various campuses in prominent cities of Pakistan like Rawalpindi, Lahore, Abbottabad etc.
Comsats is famous for its IT and business studies. Along with these departments Comsats is offering courses in Engineering, Architecture, biological sciences and meteorology. These academic programs are available on both graduate and post graduate levels.
My experience with this university is remarkable in all aspects. I’ve learnt a lot from my esteemed teachers and colleagues. Join this university to add professionalism in your academic life.”

So according to her this institute is really got something to offer to its students and students are quite satisfied as well, but ME? still not impressed. But yes you can join COMSATS for its low fee and average studies. Quality of study is higher then the price of it.

HISTORY of COMSATS : The CIIT operates under the supervision of The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South. CIIT become functional in 1998 and after a good response got charter in 2000 as degree awarding institution.Since then it is providing educational facilities in more then 6 cities.

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT COMSATS : CIIT have campuses in Islamabad, Lahore, Wah, Abbottabad, Attock and Sahiwal. Besides of these they have planned 6 more campuses in different cities of Pakistan including Karachi, Quetta, Vehari and Gujrat. Their Islamabad campus is a vast campus covering acres of land and having a well purpose build building on it with full facilities.

COMSATS STUDENT TALK: I have been studied with one of students of COMSATS and also one of my co-worker was a MBA from COMSATS Lahore. What I have observed is that the quality and presentation skills were lacking in them and after talking to them about CIIT, both of them were not satisfied with the level of education of at CIIT. But when it comes to campuses and classrooms and cafeteria and lawns and library and Lab, they were like almost satisfied. Being with them is my main source of knowledge about CIIT.

COMSATS MARKET WORTH: CIIT haven’t got a repute in market like oh you are from COMSATS, come and sit, you are selected. Basic staring level after doing MBA from COMSATS is not more then 15K average. And when it comes to Computer Sciences when you got a competitor like FAST you have to give to 200% to compete in market. But jobs are available for students of CIIT and they have a good scope for further admissions.

FACILITIES IN COMSATS: As I said above that they are facilitating their students with good facilities but their cafeteria needs to be improve in its taste and variety. Other then this, things are quit well at Lahore and Islamabad campuses of CIIT. Don’t any reference in other campuses so can’t say anything about them. Just hope they are also good.

Over all, the report found, published college tuition and fees increased 439 percent from 1982 to 2007 while median family income rose 147 percent. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade, and students from lower-income families, on average, get smaller grants from the colleges they attend than students from more affluent families.

“If we go on this way for another 25 years, we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,” said Patrick M. Callan, president of the center, a nonpartisan organization that promotes access to higher education.

“When we come out of the recession,” Mr. Callan added, “we’re really going to be in jeopardy, because the educational gap between our work force and the rest of the world will make it very hard to be competitive. Already, we’re one of the few countries where 25- to 34-year-olds are less educated than older workers.”

Although college enrollment has continued to rise in recent years, Mr. Callan said, it is not clear how long that can continue.

“The middle class has been financing it through debt,” he said. “The scenario has been that families that have a history of sending kids to college will do whatever if takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”

But low-income students, he said, will be less able to afford college. Already, he said, the strains are clear.

The report, “Measuring Up 2008,” is one of the few to compare net college costs – that is, a year’s tuition, fees, room and board, minus financial aid – against median family income. Those findings are stark. Last year, the net cost at a four-year public university amounted to 28 percent of the median family income, while a four-year private university cost 76 percent of the median family income.

The share of income required to pay for college, even with financial aid, has been growing especially fast for lower-income families, the report found.

Among the poorest families – those with incomes in the lowest 20 percent – the net cost of a year at a public university was 55 percent of median income, up from 39 percent in 1999-2000. At community colleges, long seen as a safety net, that cost was 49 percent of the poorest families’ median income last year, up from 40 percent in 1999-2000.

The likelihood of large tuition increases next year is especially worrying, Mr. Callan said. “Most governors’ budgets don’t come out until January, but what we’re seeing so far is Florida talking about a 15 percent increase, Washington State talking about a 20 percent increase, and California with a mixture of budget cuts and enrollment cuts,” he said.

In a separate report released this week by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the public universities acknowledged the looming crisis, but painted a different picture.

That report emphasized that families have many higher-education choices, from community colleges, where tuition and fees averaged about $3,200, to private research universities, where they cost more than $33,000.

“We think public higher education is affordable right now, but we’re concerned that it won’t be, if the changes we’re seeing continue, and family income doesn’t go up,” said David Shulenburger, the group’s vice president for academic affairs and co-author of the report. “The public conversation is very often in terms of a $35,000 price tag, but what you get at major public research university is, for the most part, still affordable at 6,000 bucks a year.”

While tuition has risen at public universities, his report said, that has largely been to make up for declining state appropriations. The report offered its own cost projections, not including room and board.

“Projecting out to 2036, tuition would go from 11 percent of the family budget to 24 percent of the family budget, and that’s pretty huge,” Mr. Shulenburger said. “We only looked at tuition and fees because those are the only things we can control.”

Looking at total costs, as families must, he said, his group shared Mr. Callan’s concerns.

Mr. Shulenburger’s report suggested that public universities explore a variety of approaches to lower costs – distance learning, better use of senior year in high school, perhaps even shortening college from four years.

“There’s an awful lot of experimentation going on right now, and that needs to go on,” he said. “If you teach a course by distance with 1,000 students, does that affect learning? Till we know the answer, it’s difficult to control costs in ways that don’t affect quality.”

Mr. Callan, for his part, urged a reversal in states’ approach to higher-education financing.

“When the economy is good, and state universities are somewhat better funded, we raise tuition as little as possible,” he said. “When the economy is bad, we raise tuition and sock it to families, when people can least afford it. That’s exactly the opposite of what we need.”

With a global recession unfolding, it’s tough to come up with funding for college these days, perhaps even more so if your destination is one of the world’s most expensive universities.

Aside from the general problem of rising tuition fees, the credit crunch has dented endowments. Not good news for many private American colleges and universities, which are the priciest in the world. The most expensive in terms of tuition and fees: Washington, D.C.’s George Washington University, with a sticker price of $40,437 for the 2008-2009 school year. Others in the top five are Sarah Lawrence College ($40,350), Kenyon College ($40,240), Vassar College ($40,210) and Bucknell University ($36,652).

This shouldn’t be too surprising. These schools were also the five most expensive for tuition and fees last year. By contrast, expensive colleges in other countries include Canada’s Quest University (about $20,500 for tuition in U.S. dollars), National University of Singapore ($24,000) and Imperial College London ($27,800 for non-British and European Union students).

What about the elite Ivy league institutions, like Harvard and Yale? They’re in the same ballpark – $36,173 for Harvard, $35,300 for Yale – but not quite as pricey as many smaller private schools. Factor in cost of living, books, transportation and other expenses and they’re about the same as the U.S. schools listed above. Other institutions, like Carnegie Mellon University, Wesleyan and the University of Chicago are in the same league as far as overall costs go.

Bottom line: If you’re paying more than $45,000 for a college education, you’re attending one of the world’s most expensive universities.

American-style universities also fetch the highest dollars outside the U.S. For example, Franklin University, located in the hills above Lugano, Switzerland, is fully accredited in the U.S. It costs $33,100 per year to attend; add another $7,510 for housing and $2,900 for a meal plan, mandatory for all freshmen, according to the school’s estimates.

The American University of Paris, located near the Eiffel Tower, runs close to $33,000 per year in tuition, fees and health insurance. Need books and a place to live? Budget in another $13,000.

For tuition and fees alone, George Washington University remains the most expensive in the U.S. – and perhaps the world. The total cost of a GWU education – including books, room and board and other expenses – is about $53,000 annually. That said, there are still some pretty expensive non-American style schools overseas. The University of Melbourne is one of the priciest in Australia at about $20,200 per year. The cost of living in Melbourne could tack on another $20,000 to the bill.

And the National University of Singapore, considered one of the world’s elite schools, is among the most expensive in Asia, at an estimated $31,000 per year.

In compiling our list of the priciest four-year colleges and universities, we relied on The Chronicle of Higher Education’s 2008-2009 ranking of tuition and fees for U.S. schools. In many countries, higher education is subsidized by the federal government. However, we scoured dozens of private schools abroad to obtain a snapshot of the priciest colleges overseas.

Last year, Forbes.com readers took us to task for not incorporating financial aid, room and board or a school’s estimate of total cost in our rankings. We maintain that tuition and fees are the most transparent aspects of a college’s sticker price. Other factors vary too much from school to school. Some charge a comprehensive fee for tuition, room and board; some are more generous than others with financial aid; many don’t incorporate travel expenses or the cost of living in places like New York, Chicago or Washington, D.C., in their calculations.

Whatever their differences in cost estimates, the price to attend is going up, even as the economy slows down. For the five U.S. universities with the highest tuition and fees, those items increased by 4.8 percent from 2007 to 2008. That may sound like a lot, but it’s less than the 6 percent or 7 percent tuition hikes that schools like Dickinson College and Villanova University have imposed, says the The Chronicle.Meanwhile, university endowments fell by 23 percent from July to November 2008, according to information released last week by the National Association of College and University Business Officers, which surveyed 435 schools in the U.S. and Canada.

Not all news is bad, however. For example, George Washington University plans to increase institutional financial aid this year to about $120 million, from last year’s $118 million. Last spring, President Bush signed a bill that increases the amount of federal loans students can apply for by $2,000, taking some of the pressure off the need for pricier private funding. The stimulus plan the House of Representatives passed last week includes a $2,500 tax credit for college tuition and $490 million in funding for work-study programs.

Of course, for students having trouble coming up with the cash for private schools – particularly those who aren’t among the most elite – there’s always the public route.

“You may find the selective, competitive public colleges are now looking better for those families,” says Bruce Johnstone, a professor of comparative education at the State University of New York-Buffalo.
